Generator Examples

These worked examples apply the generator sizing formula and the load and fuel consumption relationships used to plan and check generator capacity.

  1. Step 1

    A facility has a 40 kW total load and a 0.8 derating factor. Find the required generator size.

    Size = Load ÷ Derating Factor = 40 ÷ 0.8 = 50 kW

  2. Step 2

    A 50 kW generator is running at 75% load. Find the actual load.

    Load = Size × (Load % ÷ 100) = 50 × (75 ÷ 100) = 37.5 kW

  3. Step 3

    A generator is running a 37.5 kW load with a fuel rate of 0.08 gal/hr per kW. Find the fuel consumption.

    Fuel = Load × Rate = 37.5 × 0.08 = 3 gal/hr
