Understanding Single Phase Power

Single-phase power is the most common form of electrical supply for homes and small businesses, delivered over a single AC waveform.

What single-phase power is

Single-phase circuits deliver power using one alternating-current waveform over two conductors (or two conductors plus a neutral). It's simpler and less expensive to distribute than three-phase, which is why it's standard for residential and light commercial use.

Where it's used

Single-phase power supplies most household appliances, lighting, and small motors. Larger industrial equipment and heavy machinery typically require three-phase power instead.

How calculations compare to three-phase

Single-phase power, current, and apparent power calculations use the same voltage-current-power factor relationship as three-phase, but without the √3 factor that three-phase circuits require to account for their three offset waveforms.
