Electrical Conversions Examples

These worked examples apply the power-to-current conversion formula and the HP-to-kW conversion factor to move between common electrical units.

  1. Step 1

    A 240 W load runs on a 120 V circuit. Find the current.

    A = P ÷ V = 240 ÷ 120 = 2 A

  2. Step 2

    A 2.4 kW load runs on a 120 V circuit. Find the current.

    A = (kW × 1000) ÷ V = (2.4 × 1000) ÷ 120 = 20 A

  3. Step 3

    A motor is rated at 5 HP. Find its power in kilowatts.

    kW = HP × 0.746 = 5 × 0.746 = 3.73 kW
